Hays High School will present the two-act comedy “Daddy’s Girl,” along with several short sketches referred to as “Bon Appétit,” at 7 p.m. on March 7-9 at the 12th Street Auditorium. Twenty-eight students make up the cast and crew.

Hays High School will present the classic story, “Anne of Green Gables” at 7 p.m. on March 9-11 at 12th Street Auditorium. Cast members are: Front – Skyler Rodriguez, Spenser Mills-Kulmula, Caleb King, Addy Brull, Devlyn Jochum, Jordan Aschenbrenner, Katelyn Willemsen. Second – Olivia Pince, Allison Goertzen, Rose Windholz, Clare Tholstrup, Cade Becker, Atlas Seib, Bryton Unsworth, Elizabeth Noble, Calliope Green. Back – Maddie Meis, Oscar Flores, Allie Conner, Calvin Moore, Caleb Johnson, Connor Werth.

On May 6 at 6:30 pm in gym A students received and were recognized for scholarships, sports awards, academic achievements, etc. Students that came to awards night gave the announcer a card of their achievements, to be read off.

Senior Cordelia Isbell was awarded $20,000 from the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program. Isbell hopes to attend college at Pomona College in Claremont, California and become a surgeon.

The Lady Indians golf team qualified for state after taking second at the Class 5A Regional Tournament on Oct. 11. It marked the 13th straight year Hays will make the state trip. The golfers will travel to Hesston on Oct. 15 for state.

Seniors Karee Dinkel and Ethan Nunnery received Outstanding Athlete Awards. The Jack Roberts Outstanding Female Athlete Award is given to one outstanding female athlete. The Swim Carpenter Smith Memorial Award is given to one outstanding male athlete.

Senior Brendan Chapman received the National Merit Commended Student. Commended students placed among the top 50,000 scorers among 1.6 million who took the 2016 PSAT.

Seniors Lacey Gregory and Dawson Rooney received the Governor's Scholar Award. The scholarship recognizes one-percent of high school graduates. Recognition is based on academic excellence, citizenship, contribution to one's school and community and ACT score.

Senior Sara Rohleder was selected for the Air Force ROTC Scholarship. One senior is chosen each year, and the scholarship pays 100% of tuition and fees at an in-state school, while also paying a monthly stipend of $300-500 a month and a $600 per year book allowance.

Nine seniors were chosen to receive a Hays FFA Chapter Scholarships. The amounts are based upon the level of participation members have shown throughout their high school years. A total of $13,580 was rewarded.

Senior Zachary Wagner was nominated to receive the Golden Belt Bank Scholarship. It is $1000 and the recipient is chosen by a committee of teachers and administrators.

Junior Cordelia Isbell received the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists Award of Excellence. She was nominated by her teacher or guidance counselor for leadership ability, academic achievement and dedication to science and technology.

Freshman Andrew Duke, freshman Kalyssa Boyle, and sophomore Allison Hillebrand received the ACL/NJCL National Latin Exam Award for doing extremely well on the 2017 National Latin Exam.

Seniors Kyler Voss and Lacey Gregory received the KSDE Seal of Biliteracy. They were recognized for having attained proficiency in English and one or more other language by the time they graduate.

The Indian baseball team is undefeated in their first four games against Dodge City and Russell.

Esmeralda and Quasimodo (seniors Erin Muirhead and Ryan Will) sit at the top of the bell tower as Esmeralda is dying ("Top of the World Reprise"). Esmeralda tells Quasimodo how good of a friend he is as she dies at the top of the world. This leads Quasimodo to throw Frollo (senior Eric Adams) from the top of the tower and into the abyss below.

Captain Phoebus de Martin and Esmeralda (junior Cade Swain and senior Erin Muirhead) sing of their love and how "someday life will be kinder and love will be blinder." They are saying their goodbyes as they prepare to face Frollo (senior Eric Adams) the next morning at the pyre ("Someday").

Quasimodo (senior Ryan Will) talks to the statue of Saint Aphrodisius (senior Dusty Schneider) who, along with the three gargoyles Laverne, Victor, and Hugo (seniors Sarah Wyse, Michael Hernandez, and Dawson Rooney) guide him on what to do. They help him figure out the puzzle Esmeralda (senior Erin Murihead) left him. They also convince him to go after her and help her ("Flight into Egypt"). A statue (sophomore Nathan Leiker) stands in the background.

Father Claude Frollo (senior Eric Adams) sings of his love for Esmeralda (senior Erin Muirhead) and asks why he has fallen for her. He believes that her soul is unclean and in need of saving, yet he still loves her. He asks for God to either give Esmeralda to him or for her to burn in hell ("Hellfire").

Gypsy Esmeralda (senior Erin Muirhead) sings in the Cathedral asking for God to help the outcasts ("God Help the Outcasts"). She enters the Cathedral after watching Quasimodo (senior Ryan Will) get beaten. She believes it is her fault he was whipped and is trying to find him to apologize.

Quasimodo (senior Ryan Will) is bound by rope and held down by two gypsies (seniors Tanner Eiland and Dusty Schneider) while a third (senior Adam Klausmeyer) uses a whip to strike Quasimodo in the back.

Gypsy dancer Esmeralda (senior Erin Muirhead) dances to the "Rhythm of the Tambourine." This scene marks when Phoebus, Frollo, and Quasimodo (junior Cade Swain, and seniors Ryan Will and Eric Adams) fall in love with Esmeralda.

Captain Phoebus de Martin (junior Cade Swain) enters the scene and tells of his time on the front lines during the war. He is joined by four members of the cathedral guard (sophomore Nathan Leiker, junior Garrett Cole, senior Kyra Polifka-Wilhelm, and junior Rebecca Anderson) who help him tell his tale ("Rest and Recreation").

Two gypsies (seniors Adam Klausmeyer and Tanner Eiland) perform a "two-man roll" during the Feast of Fools celebration ("Topsy-Turvy").

Clopin Trouillefou, queen of the gypsies, leads the festivities on the day of the Feast of Fools. She steals a purse from a haughty looking gentleman at the beginning of the festival, before turning the entire city "upside down" ("Topsy-Turvy").

Quasimodo (senior Ryan Will) is offered a strawberry from his master Claude Frollo (senior Eric Adams) as a treat, like a dog. Frollo makes a big deal about showing Quasimodo that he is unfit for the real world, that he must stay in the bell tower, in his sanctuary.

Quasimodo (senior Ryan Will) stands atop the edge of the bell tower looking down upon the square. Gargoyles Hugo and Victor (seniors Dawson Rooney and Michael Hernandez) attempt to convince him to leave the bell tower and join the Feast of Fools. The Feast of Fools is an event one day a year where anyone, regardless of their background, is allowed to sing and dance without being subject to arrest.

Father Claude Frollo (senior Eric Adams) holds a baby whom he names Quasimodo, or "half-formed." Monks Victor, Hugo, and Laverne (seniors Michael Hernandez, Dawson Rooney, and Sarah Wyse) stand next to him, regarding him, as he decides what to do with the baby ("Bells of Notre Dame").
