Poetry Out Loud basic information

Poetry Out Loud is a National Recitation contest.

You must be a high school student (grades 9-12) and a U.S. citizen to compete.

Students wanting to participate must register with Mrs. Wagoner by Monday, Jan. 11.

The local competition is time to be announced later.

In the contest, the student advances through four levels: local, regional, state and nationals. Making it to nationals means the student has a chance of winning $20,000 in scholarships. Each winner at the state level receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult/legal guardian to Washington to compete for the national championship. The state winner’s school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The first runner-up in each state receives $100, with $200 for his or her school library. A total of $50,000 in awards.

Senior Briana Mathias has participated in Poetry Out Loud in previous years.

“It’s a really great opportunity to get scholarships,” Mathias said. “If you enjoy poetry, you should consider participating in Poetry Out Loud.”
