Students talk about post-high-school plans

It’s that time of year when seniors start to think about their plans after high school—where they want to go, when the priority application is due, and finding room in their busy schedule to make a visit.

“I plan to attend North Central Kansas Technical College,” senior Jared Wilhoft said. “I also visited colleges in Alabama and Texas.”

Wilhoft said he was drawn to these colleges because of their athletic program.

“I wanted to try to go Division I for sports,” Wilholft said.

Senior Lyle Russell expressed his interest in a few colleges, but for different reason.

“I’m considering Fort Hays, Colby, Hutch, and Dodge,” Russell said. “I was really drawn to their ag business program.”

“I’ve visited none of these colleges yet, but I probably will,” Russell said.

Several students said they planned to attend Fort Hays State, including senior Kenny Rounkles who wants to major in economics or radiology. Senior Jacob Booth plans to major in psychology, and senior Tiffanie Theide, is considering a major in child development and a minor in business.

However, Rounkles said he does not plan to make a visit to FHSU. ‘”I live here,” Rounkles said. “I don’t need to visit.”

Senior Kourtney Kaicy has slightly different college plans.

“I plan to go to Wichita State University and major in exercise science,” Kaicy said. “I’ve already applied, and I plan to visit.”

Others are taking a different path after high school.

“I plan on going straight into the workforce,” senior Brett Hertel said.

Hertel’s family owns Hertel Tank Service which works on oil tanks and rigs.

“I’m going to work in the family business.” Hertel said.
