Each assembly, a few teachers are selected to perform in various activities in front of the student body.

At the fall pep rally, the selected teachers had to first win the most points in a basketball contest, and then finish the assembly by putting a marshmallow in their mouth while singing the Alma Mater. Four teachers—Jerett Pfannenstiel, Dustin Dreher, Matt Brooks, and Abby Maska—were chosen for this particular pep rally, which led to some friendly competition between departments.

“I scored the lowest on purpose to make Brooks feel better,” Pfannenstiel said.

Pfannenstiel took fourth in the basketball competition.

“It doesn’t matter what I put in my mouth, I’m still a great singer,” Pfannenstiel said.

Dreher had a slightly different perspective.

“I felt like the goal was to beat Ms. Maska,” Dreher said. “And no matter what I have in my mouth, I’m still a horrible singer.”

Dreher also praised his competitor.

“Nice layup, Ms. Maska,” Dreher said.

“A layup for me is like a three-pointer for them, because of the height difference,” Maska said. “I think it’s pretty well known that I have better form than them. And they warmed up—I came off the bleachers cold. We all know Brooks is kind of old, so we all try to miss a few to make him feel better.”

Brooks tied for second with Dreher in the competition. “I’m embarrassed that I didn’t dominate the competition,” Brooks said. “Seriously, I think it’s important that teachers and students get involved at assemblies.”
