Seniors Adam O’Connor and Griffin Lowry received a winning record of 3-5 at the Halstead Debate Tournament.

Novice debaters sophomore James Von Lintel and freshman Jace Hesford shadowed their upper-class mentors.

O’Connor said he will be proud of his debating abilities once he places in the top 3 at State.

“To prepare I just look for any recent big news,” O’Connor said. “Then I prepare negative cases that I expect to see in the tournament.”

O’Connor said debate entails speaking quickly, studying arguments, doing a lot of research and building files.

“I always like hearing a weird case,” O’Connor said. “Being able to prepare an argument that I know will destroy the affirmative team’s case is something I enjoy.”

Both Lowry and O’Connor have participated in debate for four years.

Hesford said in order to prepare for the tournaments this year they researched China and United States relations.

“Going to the debates is awesome,” Hesford said. “It’s especially fun if it gets heated.”

Hesford said the most memorable moment of the tournament was watching Lowry and O’Connor play the negative role in the third round.

“It was amazing to watch,” Hesford said. “I’m going to continue participating in debate throughout high school.”
