Biology instructor Beth Schiel discovered the butterfly on Monday, Jan. 4 during the teacher workday.

“We aren’t entirely sure how it got in here,” Schiel said. “We were all working and then we noticed it flying around the room.”

“We think the butterfly was brought here on some flowers that Mrs. Cooper brought,” Schiel said. “It probably hatched sometime over break since it was warm in here.”

The butterfly was identified as a female due to the patterns on it’s wings.

Schiel said the butterfly roams the class freely.

“We have talked about getting a sort of butterfly sanctuary,” Schiel said. “But we aren’t sure considering the butterfly will probably only live for two months.”

Students in Schiel’s seminar and biology classes enjoy having the butterfly in the room.

Juniors Kodi Custine and Rachel Mewhinney are in Schiel’s seminar.

“It’s really entertaining to be able to watch it fly around the room,” Custine said. “It’s sad that it’s probably not going to live very long.”

Mewhinney said she doesn’t find the butterfly to be distracting.

“It’s nice that the butterfly can fly around in the room,” Mewhinney said. “It’s neat that it hatched in here.”
