Hays High places in Math Relays

Some students find their place on a sports team; others turn to academic pursuits for their teamwork endeavors. One of those teams is Math Relays, which recently held their annual competition at FHSU.

“We had 23 people place in the top ten in various events,” sponsor Dustin Dreher said. “We had about the same number place as in the past couple of years; however, in the past, we might have had a couple more first place finishes last year than this one. We had several second place finishes, but no firsts this year.”

The Hays High team placed seventh overall out of the 4A-5A-6A division.

“I had a good time,” senior Samantha Rohleder said. “This was my third year doing it, so it was just kind of routine for me.”

Rohelder encouraged other students to try their hand at this activity.

“I think it’s a really good program,” Rohleder said. “I honestly do it to get out of school, but I think it’s a worthwhile activity to participate in, and if you’re good at math, you should go for it.”

Sophomore Scott Ring had a similar perspective.

“It was pretty exciting,” Ring said. “You just have to work fast. The best part is going to lunch at the end.”

Ring said this was his second year competing.

“Anyone who thinks they can do [math relays] can try,” Ring said. “I think it’s definitely worth it.”
