The Hays High Industrial Tech Association (HHITA) takes part in small electric car races almost once a month. The electric cars are maintained and created by the students who participate in HHITA, along with the sponsors of the group.
On Sept. 24, HHITA raced at Hays Municipal Park, with races starting at 10:30 a.m.
“I was in the pits workings on the cars,” sophomore Daniel Rumbaugh said. “When the race began, I had to run around everywhere with the air compressor, a tire and a tube. I then helped to fix the chains a little.”
Chris Dinkel, who teaches industrial technology, leads the HHITA.
“The overall race went very well,” Dinkel said. “It was a beautiful day on the track. We didn’t perform like we’re used to. Our expectations were about where we performed.”
At the end of the day, Scott City won first in both the experimental and standard categories, while Hoisington was second in standard, and Hays High took third in standard.
“Because of COVID, there was a lot of new regulations,” Dinkel said. “There only five teams there, and there is usually around 13. There also only 10 to 15 cars, and there are usually around 30. Due to COVID, we had to all stay in our own pits and had to bring sack lunches.”
