Since the beginnings of 7th grade, junior Shawn Ballinger has been interested and involved with cosplay and other organizations. Cosplay is the action of dressing up as a character from a movie, book or video game. Ballinger is also involved in the Hays Gamers Guild, a club designed for people who enjoy video games, card games, gaming tournaments and various other gaming activities.

1. When did you first find an interest in cosplay?

“About 5 years ago.”

2. When did you get involved with the Hays Gamers Guild?
“I became a regular member to the Gamers Guild about 3 years ago.”

3. Has being involved with the Gamers Guild allowed you to create new friendships?

“Yes. The community there is pretty close-knit since we are all playing games together.”

4. Do you believe more people would participate in the Gamers Guild if they knew exactly what it was/knew where it was located?

“Maybe, but I think that most of the people that would be interested in it already know what it is and go there.”

5. What do you typically do at the guild?

“I play a lot of Magic the Gathering and I’m starting to get into a game called Warhammer.”

6. Have you ever cosplayed at places like Comic Con?

“Definitely. I have been to international Comicon in San Diego four times, Blizzcon three times and the Kansas City Planet Comicon five times.”

7. What would you like to tell people who are skeptical as to whether or not they would enjoy the activities that the guild has to offer?

“If you are interested in any sort of board, tabletop or trading card game, then the guild is a place for you.”

8. From where/what do you draw your inspiration for your cosplay?

“My favorite video game and comic book characters.”

9. Besides cosplay, what are your passions?

“I enjoy video games, trading card games and music.”

10. Do you think more people should show interest in cosplay?

“I think it’s a great way to show ones artistic talents. I often get a list of photographs taken with me at cons and have even had the pleasure of being featured in the Kansas City Newspaper. It just brings a whole new feeling of joy and accomplishment when you can bring your favorite characters to life.”

11. Do you plan to continue being involved with cosplay outside of high school?

“Absolutely.”

12. How much does a complete cosplay outfit typically cost for you/how much effort do you put into creating them?

“I usually spend several months making them. The most expensive so far was around $400 to make. I had to hand carve staves which was most of the cost.”

13. What would you like to say to anyone considering participating in cosplay in the future?

“Even if at first you don’t make the best cosplay ever, it’s still great to try and you will definitely get better if you continue with it. Also, it’s not just about the costume itself. If you’re going to dawn the garn you must also take on the personality of the person you’re cosplaying.”
