Basketball teams finish strong in Hays City Shootout
The Indian boys and girls basketball teams participated in the Hays City Shootout over the weekend to open the 2022-2023 season.
Each of the teams won their first game of the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 2, with the boys winning 65-40 against Newton and girls winning 45-29 against the Newton girls.
For the teams’ second games on Friday, Dec. 3, the boys lost a close game to Lawrence Free State, 59-54. The girls beat the No. 1 team in 6A, Washburn Rural, in another close game, 37-33.
On Saturday, Dec. 4 in the championship game, the girls lost a tough game to Fort Smith Northside, 39-36, to finish in second place in the tournament. The boys won their third-place game against Hugoton, 57-56.
“I think we performed really well and really meshed as a team at the tournament,” senior Aspen Melvin said.
