Battling in 96 degree heat at the Great Bend Invitational the cross country team brought back fourth place for both boys and girls.

Freshman Landri Dotts led the girls varsity team with a fourth-place medal in 18:01. Junior Yesenia Maldonado medaled in 12th with a time of 18:40.

Others who competed in girls varsity were Claire Shippy, 18th, 19:13; Cristina Leos, 24th, 19:32; and Maddie Lohmeyer, 34th, 20:36. Overall, the Lady Indians ended with 81 points.

“We ran really hard, battled and supported each other well,” Lohmeyer said.

The girls finish behind Great Bend in first with 47 points. Salina South finished second with 55 points, followed by Garden City in third with 65 points.

Great Bend boys also took the first with 23 points. Garden City came in second (46), Salina South (112), Hays (117), Wichita SE (120), and McPherson (122).

Johnny Fuller finished in 16th place, 15:18, missing a medal by one. Also competing were Grant Brungardt, 26th, 16:35; Conner Cunningham, 28th, 16:46; Nathan Erbert, 32nd, 17:10; Fernando Zarate, 33rd, 17:14; Landon Viegra, 34th, 17:17; and Corey Hale, 39th, 17:39.

Assistant Coach Haley Wolf believed the team competed very well despite the tough conditions.

“I believe we’re only going to go up from here, and have a successful season this year,” Wolf said.
