The Hays High School marching band put three months of work into the halftime show this year, with the theme for the show being “How to Train Your Dragon.” They had three pieces they had to prepare, along with memorizing the marching drill.
At the Western Athletic Conference Marching Festival, which the band attended on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Liberal, the band was judged on its marching, music, percussion, general effect and auxiliary. The band scored a rating of II in marching, music, general effect and auxiliary, and it scored a rating of III in percussion, for an overall rating of a II.
According to band director Matt Rome, it is difficult to earn a rating of a I at the festival, and only one of school in the WAC got an overall rating of a I.
“I’m most proud of the growth the band experienced over the course of the season,” Rome said. “The band’s playing, marching and general concept of this year’s show steadily improved and ended up being a really great product.”
