The debate team took place in a two-day tournament at Lawrence High School Nov. 30 through Dec. 2.

Six novice debaters competed in the Open level for the first time, which meant they were competing against four-year debaters. The results are as followed.

Freshmen Shelby Alexander and Zoey Urban ended with a 0-5 record.

Freshman Grace McCord and sophomore Caden Riat ended with a 0-5 record.

Sophomore Franklin Owens and junior Ashton Tabor ended with a 2-3 record.

“The novices have had a good year with consistently impressive records all season,” instructor Codi Fenwick said. “With each win and loss, they can take pride in improving fundamental skills for future seasons.”

Second and third year debaters, juniors Joanna Carrillo and Elliot Hoar ended with a 2-3 record.

Third year debaters, juniors Jace Hesford and Noah Orborny ended with a 3-2 record.

“There was a lot of great feedback on the ballots that indicate growth individually and as a squad,” Fenwick said. “I look forward to working with all of them again next season.”

Riat was pleased with his and his partner’s performance in a challenging tournament.

“It was a hard meet since we were competing against four-year debaters even though we are only first-years,” Riat said. “I think my partner and I did a good job and we still have previous medals to be proud of even though we did not win this one.”
