Hays High to perform production of ‘RENT’ this week

On Thursday, May 13 through Sunday, May 16, Hays High will be putting on a production of “RENT” at the 12th Street Auditorium. Tickets are available online, and extras will be sold at the auditorium.

Tickets are $11 online, and they can be purchased at www.ticketsource.us/hays-high-school.

“RENT” is a rock musical first performed in 1994 and was composed by Jonathan Larson.

“’RENT’ is about the 1990s in New York City,” sophomore Remy Stull said. “At that time, the AIDS pandemic was active, and a lot of people from the LGBTQ+ were dying.”

Many students involved in the musical are experiencing nervousness and excitement about the upcoming performances.

“I feel great about it,” Stull said. “I’m a little nervous because this is all new to me. Having more lines and parts makes it a bit harder and more nerve-racking than if I had less because I have more to memorize.”

Sophomore Keiarra Gonzales agreed with Stull.

“I’m feeling nervous about the musical, as this is my first Hays High musical I’ve been in,” Gonzales said. “I’m also excited because everyone has worked so hard, and it’s a lot of fun.”

With COVID on the decrease, friends and family are welcome to enjoy the show, which the performers said is good, but can add more stress on them.

“I’m glad we were able to have a safe musical during COVID,” Gonzales said. “It makes it exciting knowing that I get to perform in front of my friends, family and classmates. However, I’m also nervous knowing that there’s a smaller crowd.”
