Since sophomore Iris Garibay was young, she has been invested in art. Her interest sparked from the time she was first able to hold things and continued to grow from there.

1. When did you become interested in art?
I’ve been drawing since I could hold things so I guess I’ve always been interested, but I didn’t start taking art seriously until my freshman year when my art became good.

2. What got you interested?
What got me interested was hot celebrities and my want for their attention.

3. Have you ever struggled with art?
Yes, my struggles mainly come from not having the supplies I wanted and not having enough encouragement to really feel like I was good enough to continue making art.

4. How have you taught yourself to get better over the years?
I’ve taught myself to get better by learning to be patient and really looking at what’s in front of me. Lots of people when they draw don’t look at their reference often enough which makes the art not look like what it was supposed to look like.

5. What do you use for inspiration?
When I was younger I used to just like to draw the celebrities I thought were hot, but recently I’ve wanted to make my art mean something. My muse/inspiration as of lately has been marginalized groups ( people of color, the lgbtq+, etc.)

6. What is your favorite media element?
I am more comfortable with pencil since that is what was always available. I may not be very confident when using it but my favorite media is pastel.

7. What is your favorite project you have completed?
My favorite project has been a pastel drawing I did last semester called Il mio angelo custode si è addormentata sull’orologio. I also really like the ink one I did called Un Amore Privato.

8. Where is your favorite place to do art?

My room.

9. Do you plan on making a profession out of your hobby?
No, I plan on keeping it as a side thing.

10. What is your favorite style of art?
I love looking at all styles of art except for anime. My favorite to do is realism.

11. Who is your favorite artist?
My favorite famous artist is Michelangelo for sure but my favorite non-famous artist is earnestlyeleanor who is on tumblr.

12. What are you working on right now?
Currently I am working on an oil piece in my painting class.

13. What is your favorite thing about art?
My favorite thing about art is the ability to express feeling and emotion without having to use words. I also love that you can make it mean something but others will have a different meaning for it if you don’t tell them what it means.
