A 59-42 victory was the result of the championship game in the Hays City Shootout for the boys.
After the first quarter the game was tied at 11.
To start off the second quarter the Indians went on a 13-2 run to claim the lead and never relinquish it.
With just over five minutes left in the second senior Nick Petz stole the ball passed it up ahead to junior Lane Clark who performed an ankle braking move to get by the defender and went in for the reverse layup.
The boys went into the half with a 29-21 lead.
In the third quarter Hays outscored Kearney 12-2 and had a 41-23 lead going into the fourth.
The bench was cleared in the fourth quarter as coach Keltner played the reserves to finish off the game.
Junior Kenny Rounkles was named to the all-academic team. Petz, Clark and sophomore Brady Werth made the all-tournament team, while Clark was name the most inspirational player of the tournament.
A scary moment occurred with a minute left in the first half as senior Derek Bixenman went down after going for a loose ball. He went to the trainer’s room and came out on with ice on his ankle and on crutches.
The next game for the boys is Thursday, Dec. 6, at Colby.
