Boys basketball escapes second round with win

It was raining three-pointers as the boys basketball team defeated Colby, 57-54, in the second round of the Hays City Shootout on Dec. 2 at the Felten gym.

The team made 11 three’s in the game to help them to the win.

Hays also had a new line-up in the game starting junior Derek Bixenman along with four sophomores in Jordan Windholz, Lane Clark, Layne Downing and Kade Parker.

The game also had two freshmen seeing playing time in Brady Werth and Alex Delton.

Colby led the game at the end of the first quarter by a score of 14-12.

Hays then took the lead early in the second quarter on a three-pointer from Bixenman to make the score 17-15. The two teams battled back and forth with the lead changing many times before the Indians took control to take a 39-23 lead at the half.

The boys started off strong in the third quarter but struggled towards the end as the score was 54-36 at the end of the third.

Colby then made it a ball game in the fourth quarter as it held Hays to just three points. Colby outscored the Indians 18-3 in the fourth. The only player for Hays to score was Clark who hit a three.

The leading scorer for Hays was Bixenman with 18 points, followed by Clark with 11 and Werth with 10.

The next game for the boys is against Newton at 3:15 on Dec. 3, at Felten in the fifth place game.
