Library staff hosts Harry Potter Trivia on Jan. 22

On Jan. 22, the library staff hosted a “Are You Smarter Than A Staff Member?” event. The event was a “Harry Potter” trivia competition that took place in the library during PRIDE Time.

The on the staff team this month were instructors Jayme Goetz and Luke Lundmark. There was a total of seven student teams that participated in the event. Each team consisted of two people.

In order for students to participate in the event, students had to sign up on a Google Document found on the school’s website.

The questions were ranked from Easy, Medium or Hard. One of the easy questions was “What three items make up the Deathly Hallows?” An example for one of the medium questions is, “What is the address of the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix?” One of the hard questions was, “In the movie, Hermione’s Yule ball dress was pink. What color was her dress robes in the book?”

The library staff will host a trivia event every month for the rest of the school year.

“We actually have multiple ideas to make this a continuing project,” library staff member Erin Holder said. “Some of the ones we have talked about are ‘Friends,’ ‘Big Bang Theory,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ Disney, ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Hunger Games,’ ‘The Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ and Books to Movies. We will be putting up a poll on the HHS website at the beginning of next week to get student input to try and decide what we will be doing next month!”

The top three student teams received prizes from participating in the event. Some of the prize options were McDonald’s Combo Pack coupons, $10 Hays Hair Academy gift card, a free 12 oz. drink at Mokas coupon and $5 gift cards from several different restaurants.

Tied in first ace were sophomore Mazzy Sacia and student teacher Quenton Rucker subbing in for senior Marie-Lyn Castaing and freshmen Devlyn Jochum and Kaley Rajewski with 105 points, and tied for third place were juniors Tom Drabkin and Andrew Duke and the staff members.

“I feel like it went great for the first time around,” Holder said. “I was thrilled to have so many staff members willing to participate and get into it. We absolutely underestimated the amount of people we would need for such an event, so without those teachers and Hays Public Library staff members willing to step up and help out, it would not have run as smooth! Overall, we are very pleased with this event and intend on doing it monthly until the end of the year.”
