The Hays High DECA, National Honor Society and Student Council organizations gathered on Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 6-9 p.m. to go to assigned areas around the community and pick up non-perishable food items.
The groups collect these food items to take them to the Community Assistance Center (CAC) for donations. The CAC is a place where low-income families from Ellis County can go to get items to meet their needs, such as food, clothes and regular household items. The CAC does not receive anything from the government; instead they solely provide based on donations from citizens.
Citizens who donated were met with volunteers at their doors, asking to take the food, or if they were unable to be at home at the specific time, they could leave the food on the front porch for the volunteers to take.
“My favorite part of Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat was being able to help others and make a difference in my community,” junior Mitzil Carrillo Maldonado said.
