Hays High School Student Council officers went to Ellsworth on Monday, Sept. 30 for a StuCo leadership conference. The officers had a day of fun, development and collaboration.
Right off the bat, as students filed into the gym at Ellsworth High School, StuCo officers from various schools joined together in line dancing. After dancing, the students were guided to the auditorium so that they could attend their first session.
In the auditorium, students were welcomed by the Ellsworth StuCo president as well as the Ellsworth principal. After the brief welcoming and introductions, the councils participated in a balloon scavenger hunt.
After the game, State Director Rod Garman gave a brief speech to the students. He then introduced the keynote speaker A’ric Jackson.
Jackson, a leadership trainer and speaker, gave the students a speech called “Don’t Be Scared.” After the speech, the students had a small break.
After their break, the students went to another session with Jackson. During this second session, they learned about the four different leadership styles: thinker, relater, socializer and director.
To end their fun and eventful day, the StuCo students learned a flash mob dance from Jackson.
“The main takeaway I remember from the conference is that everyone has a box that at one point or another they have been put in, and we learned how to get out of the box,” StuCo president senior Kiera Dealy said. “Overall, it was a positive experience, and I feel I have become a better leader because of it.”
