Instructor Lynn Zimmerman talks about teaching Human Biology
Human Biology is a class offered to juniors and seniors for either one semester or a full year. The class contains material about the human body and its functions. Instructor Lynn Zimmerman has been teaching the subject for 28 years and has taught Hays High students for 13.
“This is an awesome class for anyone interested in learning more about the intricacies of the human body and how to live a healthier lifestyle,” Zimmerman said.
The class can be beneficial to take students are going into a health related career.
“I think that the majority of students enrolled in my course are contemplating a career in the healthcare field,” Zimmerman said. “I have a lot of pride in the fact that I have taught many students who now have rewarding careers in some area of the medical field.”
The class itself can be fairly easy to get a good grade in. However, effort must be put in to receive an A in the class.
“I run my course in such a way that the student gets out of it what they put into it,” Zimmerman said. “It is fairly easy to make a C or B, but to make an A; the students have to really apply themselves. I set it up this way because I see the value in knowing the information, and if this course was extremely difficult to attain an A, then my numbers would be dramatically reduced.”
As far as material goes, students are able to learn valuable knowledge applying the human body and how it functions.
“I use a systematic approach to human anatomy and physiology, although it is difficult to cover all of the human body systems on a block schedule,” Zimmerman said. “Thus far (this year) we have studied directional and anatomical terminology, tissue, and skeletal and muscle systems.”
“Currently, my classes are covering the nervous system. The remainder of the semester, we will study cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems in detail. We will finish up with a major dissection lab involving fetal pigs.”
Zimmerman claims she is a detail-orientated person and enjoys learning how things work.
“It is enjoyable to me to see my students get excited about the materials I present to them in class,” Zimmerman said.
Zimmerman enjoys teaching and learning things in depth. The Human Biology class fulfills learning intricate things and can be interesting to students.
