New librarian
Librarian Janet Affentranger is new to the Hays High staff this year replacing Elizabeth Harris who retired last year. Affentranger has some exciting things to say about her teaching career and is looking forward to her time here at the Hays High library.
“I have been teaching since 1978,” A said. “Seven of it has been teaching grade school while the other 29 I have been a librarian.”
Although Affentranger has loved and still loves to be a librarian, she expresses her love for teaching children in grade school.
“I have taught a wide variety of grades including 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th grade.” Affentranger said.
Curious to know what she enjoyed most, Affentranger struggled to choose a grade she really enjoyed teaching. Hesitant, Affentranger finally said 5th graders.
“You know, I taught a school in a farm community so it was interesting to see the 5th graders not quite top of the school but anxious to be there,” Affentranger said.
Affentranger encourages everyone to read and stresses how it has showed her such a different side of the world.
“It really opened my eyes to such new ideas,” Affentranger said. “I don’t know what I would do without reading.”
