Each year, National Honor Society organizes the Hays High Holiday Help Project to assist several families during the holiday season.
This year, they will be assisting 10 families for a total of 52 people. Sponsor Lisa Colwell described the process of the project.
“Once the families are chosen, the head of each household fills out a list of items that each family member needs,” Colwell said. “We also ask if the family needs a tree and/or decorations. The families are all anonymous to us and we have no budget for the project. We rely on donations from staff, students, individuals, businesses and organizations that want to be involved with the project.”
According to Colwell, so far there has been approximately $2,000 in donations.
“Anyone wanting to donate can contact me or Tammy Stewart in the office,” Colwell said.
Colwell said the mission of NHS is to develop leadership skills through service to others, and that is just what this project does.
“NHS takes a leadership role in this project and tries to involve as many students at HHS as possible,” Colwell said. “We are always amazed and humbled by the generosity of others at this time of the year. There is much need in our community, and this project helps ten very deserving families have a much happier holiday season.”
