Girls golf takes third at 4A state tourney on Oct. 19
After shooting a team total of 411, the girls golf team came away with a third-place finish at the Class 4A State Golf Tournament on Oct. 19 at the Sugar Hills Country Club in Goodland.
Taking first was Winfield with a score of 395, followed by Goodland with a 400. Other teams present were Spring Hill 424, Andale 431, Topeka-Hayden 432, Altamont-Labette 449, KC-Piper 450, Holcomb 451, Frontenac 463, Augusta 470, and Chanute 477. The championship was hosted at the Smoky Hill Country Club.
Individually, junior Katie Brungardt took second place, making All State with a score of 82. Senior Taylor DeBoer took fifth place, also making All State with a score of 89. Freshman Emily McGuire scored a 106 and junior Breanna Park had a 134 to account for the varsity team score.
“I’m pretty pleased with my performance at state,” DeBoer said. “I definitely could have done better. The wind was a big factor in how I played.
“I feel like the team did really well at state. The younger girls played well and since Katie and I placed as well, it all contributed to the third place win. I wasn’t expecting us to place at state.”
DeBoer said a highlight of the season for her was getting WAC Player of the Year among other things.
“Another highlight of my season was placing first in four tournaments, including Regionals,” DeBoer said.
DeBoer said she wished the team all the luck for next year.
“I have made a lot of good friends through golf and have also learned what is like to be part of a close knit team,” DeBoer said. “I don’t have any regrets.”
