The Options Student Advisory board is organizing its “Chalk About Love” event, where on Wednesday, Feb. 22, students are invited to go out on the sidewalk in front of the main entrance of the school during PRIDE Time to write inspiring messages for their peers.
“Chalk About Love” will be open to all students and is intended to spread positive messages to the students and staff at Hays High School. The board also wants to use this event to bring more awareness to teen relationship violence and healthy relationships.
Last year, for the event, about 100 students participated, and the group is hoping for more this year.
“During the pre-teen and teen years, it is critical for youth to begin learning skills to create and maintain healthy relationships, including managing feelings and communicating in a healthy way,” sponsor Sue Ann Tebo said.
The Options Student Advisory Board is partnered with Options, which is a non-profit organization in Hays that helps people who have been victims of domestic violence or relationship violence. The students on the board here at Hays High work with the organization to educate students about these issues.
The student board meets every other Tuesday in the Lecture Hall and is led by Tebo, president junior Harley Werth and vice president junior Lily Garrison.
