Student Council Public Relations Officer Emmy Morley and Treasurer Hope Kisner presented to the Board of Education during its meeting on Feb. 8.

Kisner discussed events StuCo has organized this year and ways the events have been COVID-friendly, like the outdoor Homecoming dance that was hosted in October.

“We had our Indian Call, but we didn’t have a dance because we didn’t want to have it outside, and we could not have it indoors,” Kisner said.

Despite the limitations, StuCo is dedicated to creating events for students.

“This year for StuCo, one of our main goals is bringing people together,” Morley said. “Obviously, there’s been a lot of setbacks with last spring and the beginning of this school year, but we’re really trying to encourage students to be active in their school life because we can’t really have big events.”

Morley mentioned the other schools in Kansas currently learning online and how it is important to “appreciate what we have, not what we don’t have.”

Board President Mike Walker applauded the work of StuCo.

“You’ve been doing everything you can to continue on, even with COVID,” Walker said.

Principal Martin Straub also commended the work of the executive StuCo members this year.

“Sometimes the answer has to be ‘no,’ and I have good reasons to say ‘no,’ and they understand that,” Straub said. “But, there’s not one time they don’t come back with a better idea. I praise these guys because it’d be easy to discouraged and disappointed.”
