“The Martian” movie review

"The Martian" movie review

Whilst traveling in space and more particular the planet Mars, a space crew of eight member’s including Mark Watney (Matt Damon) attempt to quickly jump aboard the space craft machine and get home due to a sudden windy storm.

During the walk from the planet to the travel craft, amidst the storm, Watney gets blown around as well as being hit with debris which causes him to be left behind. The other seven members, however, are under the impression he is dead.

Within a days-worth on Earth, Watney wakes up, uncovers himself with piles of sand and takes himself to the left behind station of another travel craft and successfully patches up his wound in the stomach that was caused by the debris.

Back home on Earth, NASA presidents are still all under the impression that Watney is dead. Soon, information is reached to the public and now all of the world knows Watney is “dead”.

Back on the Red Planet, Watney starts to prepare a long stay on Mars until help is reached as well and carefully portioning food, water and other supplies. In the midst, he also successfully creates a system to plant potatoes to help him last longer in his life on Mars.

NASA researchers and other investigators of the Red Planet start to study the area the crew members and Watney were tossed in the storm to better understand what could have happened when they suddenly notice a change in pattern and objects.

With this information, they soon discover Watney is not dead but trying to travel himself in a moving device that will take him to the other travel aircraft that works so he can launch himself back to earth.

During this time, lots of trial and error occur including the loss of his growing potatoes and the battery constantly dying on the moving device.

Then, in a short matter of time after discovering Watney is indeed alive, NASA researchers and Wantey create a communication system with letters and a video camera to explain different things to each other, one of them being the crew does not yet know Watney is alive because they are still in travel time back to Earth.

Longingly, after a harsh decision, members of NASA relay to the crew members in space that Watney is alive and they should turn around and pick him up. However, there would be some difficulties like potentially not having enough fluids to keep the space craft in space for that long, or the fact that it isn’t a guarantee Watney can be saved due to the amount of space between the craft he and the crew have.

Between communicating different messages and a lot of turmoil, different NASA members are also trying to figure ways to send Watney more food and supplies to survive until crew members reach him. One time trying the attempt, it fails giving NASA and Watney lost hope.

Finally, with thought out processes and a lot of faith, the crew members rescue Watney and all eight members are returned back to Earth safely.

I give this move a 10 out of 10. The graphics were phenomenal and the realism of the movie was great. I also thought the characters were well developed and it was very interesting considering it is a science fiction type movie.
