No April Fools—forensics traveled to Phillipsburg on Tuesday to compete.

Senior Colton Leiker placed sixth in prose, senior Megan Zeman placed third in poetry, junior Ben Rajewski placed third in extemporaneous speaking, and senior Rachel Muirhead placed second in Dramatic Solo, qualifying for the state competition.

“I thought [the meet] was good,” Rajewski said. “I improved in extemp and it was fun to compete in prose for the first time.”

Muirhead said she thought she did poorly her first round but came back and managed to break finals.

“Each tournament gets a little better, a little more fun and a little easier,” Muirhead said.

Sponsor Zach Butte agreed with Muirhead.

“We’re doing better because more people are attending now that spring break is over and schedules are opening up,” Butte said. “More people attending make tournaments more enjoyable.”

Freshman Griffin Lowry competed in informative speaking but did not make it to the final round of competition.

“Even though I didn’t get to finals, I think I improved immensely,” Lowry said. “I just need to work on confidence.”

Zeman said she was excited to get more feedback on her poetry.

“It was nice to get more feedback so I know what I need to improve on to be successful at state,” Zeman said.

This was Leiker’s first meet.

“It wasn’t bad for the first tournament and for the first time with my prose piece,” Leiker said. So I think it was a good experience, especially for the first time out.”
