Baseball:
The Indian baseball team played an away double-header against the Dodge City Red Demons on April 21.
Coming into the game, Hays was ranked 118th in the state while Dodge City was ranked 128th.
Game 1:
Senior Kal Lonsdale led the game the first inning with a double, as he moved to third on junior Paxton Shaw’s sacrifice bunt. With two outs, junior Beau Dreiling followed up with a double to center field, driving in two runs.
Hays scored twice in the first inning on a senior Bennett Smith sacrifice fly, and sophomore Jace Dreher doubled down from the left-field line. Hays added an extra five runs in the fourth to build a 7-1 lead over Dodge City.
Dodge City tried to retaliate by scoring three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings. However, Shaw clutched the win through striking out three and walking none, ending the game in 10-6, with Hays taking the win. The game also had an additional ninth inning.
Game 2:
The first three innings had no scoring for both teams until junior Cade Jennings scored twice on a groundout, and senior Brett Rhoades added three with a three-run home run to left field.
Dodge City scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game. However, Dreiling and Jennings clutched the end with an additional point respectively, ending the game 5-3, the Indians taking the victory.
“For the most part, we played really well against Dodge City,” head coach Dustin Dreher said. “We had a couple innings that we were a little shaky on the mound but came out with two wins.”
Track & Field:
The varsity track team competed at Great Bend Jack Bowman Invitational on April 17.

Overall, the boys ranked fourth out of nine teams and scored 82 points while the girls placed second out of nine teams with 128 points.
Boys Golf:
The varsity boys golf team competed at the Bob Blazer Hays Invitational golf tournament at Smoky Hill Country Club on April 20.
In total, there were 72 athletes competing individually and 11 teams.
At the meet, senior Caleb Thompson ranked second scoring 78 while senior Braiden Bickle and senior Trey Oakley tied for fifth, both shooting an 80. Sophomore Miles Weimer placed 15th with an 85 while sophomore Dalton Schmidtberger and freshman Logan Cunningham ranked 17th, both accumulating 87.
Junior Harper Sultzer finished 24th with an 89, and sophomore Brady Zimmerman and junior Mason Simmons both placed 31st with a score of 91. Senior Izaac Fox positioned at 38th with 92 while sophomore Riley Zimmerman ranked 46th with 94. Junior Carter Will placed 58th with 103, and senior Noah Schaeffer finished 63rd with 106. Junior Emery Spray and senior Parker Linenberger both ended 65th with a108 while senior Eli May ranked 68th with a 109. Freshman Beckett Keller finished in 71st with a 113.
Overall, the boys placed first with a total score of 323. Top 10 medalists included Thompson, Bickle and Oakley.
“We did extremely well at our home meet,” head coach Mark Watts said. “It’s always one of our goals to win our home tournament. This was the first Western Athletic Conference [WAC] tournament out of five, so it was important to win this first one to take a one-point lead over Dodge City.”
Boys Tennis:
The varsity boys tennis team played a tri-dual game in Junction City on April 20 and concluded with a Tuesday pool play game on April 21 in Abilene.
Junction City:
The Hays team played against Junction City and Washburn Rural.
Against Junction City, Hays went 3-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. The matchup against Washburn Rural ended in 0-6 in singles and 0-3 in doubles.
Overall, Hays took second against the opposing teams.
Abilene:
In the singles division, junior Elijah Schmitz finished third while junior Brody Burns placed fifth. Meanwhile, in doubles, junior Cyran Randle and junior Damian Guzman placed third while senior Brian Nguyen and freshman Brooks Dixon finished fifth.
“As a whole, I feel the boys played well and practiced the different strategies between singles and doubles,” head coach Alicia Plante said. “Everyone that played got to play both a singles match and a doubles match against each team, so every player got to diversify their experience.”
Plante said she hopes to improve the team through different training methods.
“Going forward, we are wanting to improve in hit consistency and looking for opportunities to play on the offensive/attack on the court,” Plante said. “We are working on thinking strategically and playing the game smart.”
