Baseball:
The Indian baseball team competed at home on May 8-9 for its annual Diamond Classic Invitational tournament, which included Hays, Life Prep Academy, Manhattan and Thomas More Prep.
Game 1, Day 1
On May 8, playing against Manhattan, Hays took a lead with a senior Kal Lonsdale scoring on an error. Manhattan retaliated by scoring two runs in the fourth inning to break the 1-1 tie and then added five runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning.
Junior Paxton Shaw scored a single in the sixth inning, with the last two innings being dry and resulting in a 10-2 Manhattan victory.
Game 2, Day 1
After losing to Manhattan, Hays faced Life Prep. Sophomore Casen Hardman started off the first inning with a four-run score while senior Brett Rhoades and sophomore Nash Kaiser proceeded to drive in three runs each.
The Indians then supplied six runs in the second inning, with Lonsdale, Rhoades, senior Kaleb Roe, sophomore Jace Dreher and junior Beau Dreiling all scoring.
Life Prep scored in the top of the third, but the Indians responded with a Kaiser single, then Dreiling and Hardman both having two-run singles.
Life Prep scored three in the top of the fourth, and the Indians answered again with another five runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game early with a 20-5 victory.
Day 2, Final Game
After the success against Life Prep, the Indians faced in-town rival TMP.
TMP started with a 3-0 lead, with Monarchs Ty Schmeidler and Logan Baalmann hitting RBI singles at the top of the first, then Schmeidler scoring another run; Schmeidler also benefited the TMP team by pitching six-plus innings and allowing only two runs.
In the top of the fifth, Hays finally got on the scoreboard, with Hardman driving in the Indian’s first run, but the Monarchs answered by scoring another single from Baalmann to extend their lead to 5-1.
Hays junior Cade Jennings singled in the bottom of the sixth inning, but TMP’s Schmeidler recorded another strikeout to preserve the Monarchs’ 5-2 lead.
At the end of the tournament, Hardman and Shaw were both named to the All-Tournament Team for Hays.
Track & Field:
The varsity track and field team separated their athletes to two different meets, including McPherson on April 30 and Topeka Seaman on May 1.

“I thought both meets were really positive steps for us,” head coach Kip Keeley said. “We had strong competition at both McPherson and Seaman, and our athletes responded well. We saw a lot of season-best performances and some continued consistency from our top kids, which is what you want this time of year.”
Boys Golf:
The boys golf team competed at the Salina Invitational on May 5.
At the meet, there were a total of 13 teams and 80 athletes. Senior Caleb Thompson placed third with a 76 while sophomore Miles Weimer finished eighth and senior Trey Oakley ended in ninth, both having a total of 78.
Senior Braiden Bickle placed 33rd with a score of 83 while junior Mason Simmons finished 42nd with an 88.
Overall, the boys placed first with a score of 319.
Boys Tennis:
The boys tennis team hosted and played at their home Western Athletic Conference (WAC) meet on May 4 and the regional meet on May 8.
WAC
In the singles division, sophomore Larry Denning placed fourth, and freshman Brooks Dixon finished fifth. In doubles, juniors Camden Luck and Cyler Luck placed second, and juniors Damian Guzman and Cyran Randle finished third. The boys placed fifth overall.
“Overall, I’m proud of how our team played at WAC,” coach Alicia Plante said. “We had two main varsity singles players unable to finish the season, which was a challenge for the team, but I am proud of our freshman who stepped up to play No. 1 singles and a JV player playing No. 2 singles. Our doubles teams played really well, both medaling, with movement on the court. They’ve shown lots of growth throughout the season.”
Regionals
To qualify for the state tournament, the athletes must place in the Top 6 in either singles or doubles.
In the singles division, Denning and Dixon both lost their two matches. In doubles, Guzman and Randle lost their first match, won their second match and lost their final match.
Also in doubles action, the Lucks won both their matches against Salina South, 6-4 and 6-4, before facing Valley Center and losing both matches, 6-0 and 6-0. Finally, Salina Central was their last opponent, with the boys losing 6-4 then 6-3.
