On Oct. 19, the Hays High School volleyball team traveled to Garden City, where they played against Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend and Liberal, as part of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
In the first game, the Indians played against the Dodge City Demons. The Demons came up short against the Indians, and the end score was 2-1. Hays, at the time, had an improved record of 26-6.
The next game, they played the Garden City Buffaloes. The matches were back-to-back the whole time, but Hays lost overall, 2-1 and broke their 14-game winning streak for a record at the time of 26-7.
After the second game, the Indians played against the Great Bend Panthers. Hays lost to the Panthers, 2-0, to bring their record to 26-8.
In the final game, they played against the Liberal Redskins. The Redskins also came up short against the Indians, as Hays won with a score of 2-0 and improved their record to 27-8.
“At the WAC tournament, we ended up two and two on the day,” coach Shannon Funk said. “We really had a goal to win WAC [and] to win the league championship, and that didn’t end up happening. So, it was a little bit frustrating us, and we’re looking forward to this coming weekend.”
This upcoming weekend, the volleyball team has sub-state, which will be held on Oct. 26 at Goddard.
