A buzzer-beater three by junior Lane Clark as time expired sent the game against Newton into overtime tied at 49.
Hays got ahead by as many as nine in the first half, but let Newton regain the momentum and take the lead right before half.
Newton attempted to hang on to a 10 point lead as the game went into the fourth quarter.
The Indians were down by nine with three minutes left in the game before storming back to tie it up on the Clark three.
In the overtime period Hays outscored the Railers 5-4 for the victory.
Sophomore Brady Werth led the team in scoring with 14 points followed by senior Nick Petz with 13 and then Clark with 12.
The next game for the boys is in the final against Kearney at 7:30 p.m.
