The boys soccer team was defeated 3-2 by Great Bend after going to penalty kicks in the Regional Championship game.
Hays went into the half up 2-1.
The first goal of the game was put in by junior Kellen Griffin with an assist from junior Ethan Fort.
Sophomore Jordan Windholz then scored with an assist from senior Gustavo Reyes to take a 2-0 lead.
Great Bend then scored right after Windholz’s goal to make the game 2-1.
In the second half Great Bend put in one goal to send the game into overtime 2-2.
The two teams then battled through two ten minute overtimes and two five minute overtimes to go into penalty kicks.
The first five shooters for each team split 3-3. It then went six rounds where each team matched the other on the penalty. Great Bend then won on the 12th round of penalties.
“We played well, but just couldn’t get it done,” Reyes said.
