Tuesday night’s basketball game for the boys ended with a disappointing finish with Great Bend winning, 41-38, on a buzzer-beater three-pointer.
Hays mounted its comeback in the fourth quarter after being down 29-22. Senior Seth Tophoj hit a three-pointer with just under four minutes left in the game to bring the team within two points.
Great Bend then hit three free throws to take the lead by five. Senior Trey Herman hit a three on the next possession to cut the deficit to two points.
The team then stole the ball from Great Bend and senior Charles Howell hit a layup.
After that, Great Bend scored with 34 seconds left, Hays came back when senior Zack Gaughan hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to tie the game at 38-38.
Great Bend then called a timeout with 11 seconds left to draw up a play. The Great Bend player received the ball from a cross-court pass and drained a three-pointer as the buzzer went off.
The next game for the boys basketball team is tonight at Garden City.
