On Feb. 13, the Hays High School boys swim team travelled to Garden City to compete in the Western Athletic Conference meet.
It was a very successful day for the Indians, as they won eight out of 11 events. As a team, they took second behind the Garden City Buffalos, and together, the Indians took home 14 gold medals, more than twice as many as Garden City.
Senior Marshall Sook earned the WAC Swimmer of the Year, and coach Tyler Stein won the WAC Coach of the Year.
Sook will compete in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle at state, while also competing in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay. Along with him in the relays will be juniors Cedric Durr, Karsen Flaska and Chase Zadina. The three juniors will also join junior Noah Schaeffer to compete in the medley relay, with junior Jude Hileman attending as the alternate.
The state meet is in Lenexa on Feb. 20.
