Looking back 10, 25, 50 years ago
The Guidon staff has decided to include a monthly feature in which it will look through past editions of the newspaper to see the news events that were being reported 10, 25, and 50 years ago during each particular month.
10 Years Ago
May 2009
- The Guidon discusses the new recycling program started by Web-team.
- The district implements a new filter for student devices.
- Seniors look back over past four years.
- The Guidon qualified for the All-Kansas Award for Excellence in Newspaper and Journalism for the first time.
- Five students place at state for Journalism, all music students came back from State Solo and Ensemble Festival with “I” or “II” ratings, seven students won ribbons at the Western Kansas Technology Fair, three DECA members made it to finals at the International Career Development Conference, and 11 students placed at State FFA Career Develepment Event.
25 Years Ago
May 1994
- Forensics claims the 5A State Championship.
- Three students qualify for national forensics competition.
- The school board approves of a block schedule for the upcoming school year, alternating maroon and gold days.
- Girls Swim has one go to state.
50 Years Ago
May 1969
- French class students plan transatlantic trip England and France to study French.
- Guidon and Indian Call staff announced for 1969-1970 school year.
- Mr. Lewis chosen as May’s Faculty Finest.
- Principal Cylde W. Rothgeb looks back over 25 years at Hays High after announcing his retirement.
- 11 faculty members leave HHS.
- 11 students qualify for state track meet.
