Looking back 10, 25, 50 years ago
The Guidon staff has decided to include a monthly feature in which it will look through past editions of the newspaper to see the new events that were being reported 10, 20 and 50 years ago during each particular month.
10 Years Ago
February 2009
- The Guidon interviewed two students who attended President Barack Obama’s inauguration.
- Debate team wins state championship.
- “Sweetheart” dance was renamed to “Snowball” dance.
- Indian Call King and Queen crowning was moved from an assembly in May to a basketball game in February.
- The Guidon interviewed instructor Lynn Zimmerman about her interest in photography and the awards she had won.
25 Years Ago
February 1994
- Boys swim team goes to their first swim meet.
- Spring play auditions were held in February.
- The varsity Wrestling squad went to state competition.
- The Guidon discussed Sexual Harassment.
- Kennedy Middle School instructor Nancy Costigan named Kansas Teacher of the year.
50 Years Ago
February 1969
- Debate team placed third at state.
- Orchestra instructor Dean Angeles chose as February’s Faculty Finest by the Guidon staff.
- Senior Bill Hall was chosen by Student Council as February’s Rotarian.
- Jack Roberts named as new Principal of Hays High after being the principal at Hays Middle School.
- Members of Hays High’s Junior Classical League attend largest state JCL convention on K-State’s campus.
- Two seniors awarded by National Organizations, Daughters of the American Revolution and American Association of University Women, respectively.
- Wrestling squad sends three to state.
