Debate team members receive medals at Hoisington meet

All members of the Hays High School debate team who participated in the Hoisington debate meet received medals on Oct. 21. The groups placed first, fourth and fifth.

Senior Everett McClure and freshman Alex Leiker took first place. Junior Jacob Borushaski and sophomore Jacob Hemphill took fourth place. Fifth place was given to sophomores Sofia Luna and Emersyn Sander.

Debaters are judged by how effectively they express their opinion on the given topic and how thoroughly they respond to the counterargument. The debate topic this year is over Social Security. On the affirmative side, groups argue that Social Security should be increased, specifically for those who are disabled, elderly or young. The negative view is that Social Security does not require any adjustments.

“I think we got first place because we both employed good rhetoric and convincing arguments,” McClure said.

The meet lasted for about eight hours, beginning in the morning and continuing through late afternoon.

“The most challenging thing was staying awake because of how long it went on,” McClure said.
