The Hays High School varsity boys and girls wrestling teams went to Liberal on Jan. 14, where they dueled against Liberal.
On the boys’ side, senior Roberto Macias, junior Jaxson Chartier, junior Grady Lind, junior Jonathan Rigler, sophomore Tanner Geist and sophomore Cyler Luck won their matches, with all six of them scoring six points each for the team.
Sophomore Ethan Branaman and sophomore Camden Luck scored five points each for the team, while junior Cade Lind scored four points for the team. Finally, senior Dalton Meyers, sophomore Jayden Trout and freshman Brian Prough all scored three points for the team.
After all the matches, the dual ended in a Hays victory over Liberal, with a score of 59-12.
“In fact, Dalton Myers got his 100th career varsity win while we were down there in the duel and picked up a lot of pins we had,” head coach Heath Meder said. “We had a lot of bonus points too, with most of the team getting them from technical falls or pins. So honestly, that many bonus points is really good to see.”
On the girls’ side, junior Audrey Guiterrez, sophomore Timber Lovewell, sophomore Keyla Macias, sophomore Kenlee Vehige and sophomore Addalyn Wilkie won their respective matches, with all five of them scoring six points.
Senior Tionna Napue and senior Ava Ruiz scored five points for the team, while junior Reese Vehige, sophomore Emersyn Copper, sophomore Eleanor Stoffel, freshman Alondra Garcia and freshman Chloe Robben competed but did not score any points for the team.
It was a close ending score, but the Hays girls came out on top, 41-39, against Liberal.
“They are a lot stronger this year than they have in the past,” Meder said. “Audrey Gutierrez picked up a pin in her 170-weight class match; in fact, that was enough points to lock us the win for the duel, so that was it. That was a really big victory. Getting close to the end of the duel, we had some of our varsity wrestlers out at a couple different weight classes through some injuries and things. So, it was still nice that we came out with a victory.”
