Colleen Hoover’s 2019 novel “Regretting You” was recently released as a movie on Oct. 24 and has taken social media by storm.
The movie follows Clara Grant (played by McKenna Grace), a 16-year-old theater student who loses her father and her aunt in a car accident and is left to find a way to grieve. Through her troubles, she gets close to a classmate, Miller Adams (played by Mason Thames), whose reputation had kept Clara away from him. Grace and Thames are familiar faces, and I love them both so much. Those two starring in the movie together was a major part of why I wanted to see it.
Throughout the film, there is drama, not only with Clara’s and Miller’s new relationship, but with the tragic deaths and also with the family secrets. Because of the continuously unfolding drama, it keeps you engaged for the entire film; I literally could not look away from the screen.
It also makes you feel all of the feelings; it made me laugh, it made it want to cry, it made me anxious. I love a film that hits me deeply emotionally and that is a sappy romance like this, with an “enemy to lovers” trope. The romance aspect of this movie was fairly predictable in most parts, but I do not see that as a fault. A basic high school romance is something a teenage booklover looks forward to in a movie, and this one delivered that perfectly.
With some movies, a problem I have is the overall flow – whether it feels like we are flying through it or whether it is dragging on. Fortunately, I thought this movie flowed nicely; I stayed attentive, never got lost and never got bored.
However, there were some parts I wish were elaborated on a bit more, especially with the plot between Clara’s dad and her aunt. It almost felt like they brushed off some key details that could have added more to the movie.
Overall, I enjoyed this film. The cast, the plot and even the soundtrack – it all made an incredible movie. I would 100 percent return to the theater to see it a second time, and I would recommend it to anyone curious to see it.
