Girls Golf
On Monday, Oct. 13, the Hays High School girls golf team competed at its 5A regional tournament in Salina. The team took third overall out of six schools, outdoing fourth place by 13 strokes. Sophomore Kinley Pfannenstiel placed seventh with an 89. All attending players – seniors Lily Butler and Ava Erbert, juniors Elsa Brungardt and Brooklynn Koerner, and sophomores Kinley Pfannenstiel and Giana Schumacher – qualified for the state tournament, taking place on Monday, Oct. 20 and Tuesday, Oct. 21 in Emporia.
Girls Tennis
On Saturday, Oct.11, the Hays High girls tennis team competed at regionals in Andover. Attending players included singles players seniors Melissa Boland and Delia Dixon and doubles players seniors Mya Ploutz, Emersyn Sander, Jadyn Younger and Brynn Zweifel. While none qualified for the state tournament, the team felt they played strongly against the competition, ending the season with satisfaction in their performance.
“Even though our whole team lost, the experience was super special,” Boland said. “We made some great memories that I’ll cherish forever.”
Volleyball
On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Hays High volleyball team competed against Phillipsburg and Garden City at the Hays Tri Tournament. Hays won with a final score of 2-0 against both schools. Hays High is currently ranked second in the Western Athletic Conference with a record of 4-1.
“The season is going well this year,” senior Zoe Winter said. “A highlight would have to be us coming together and working through adversity when playing a challenging team. I’m hoping that we can go all the way for the rest of the season and punch a ticket to state.”
Girls Cross Country
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Hays High girls cross country team competed at the Salina Central meet. The Hays High team placed sixth overall, and freshman Alexa Cooley placed 18th while also running a career best time of 21:52.
“We ran pretty well at a pretty tough meet,” head coach Jerold Harris said. “Many of these teams will qualify for the state meet.”
