Girls cross country has traveled to two events, one in Great Bend on Sept. 4 and one in Hesston on Sept. 11.
In Great Bend, it was a tough meet for the varsity, with only junior varsity girls placing with medals. Freshman Avrie Branaman placed second, freshman Alexa Cooley placed fifth and freshman Kiana Sun placed ninth.
In Hesston, the team performed well, and the girls team placed with medals. The Top 10 were Cooley in fifth and Branaman in sixth for the Class 9 heat. Sophomore Bekah Clark placed ninth in the Class 10 heat, and senior Serena Wilson placed eighth in the Class 11 heat.
“I felt that we competed extremely well in these two meets,” head coach Jerold Harris said. “Hesston was a tough meet, with the course, heat and humidity, but we battled. We will continue to grow and get better throughout the season.”
Girls golf hosted a home meet on Sept. 2 at Smoky Hill Country Club, where they overall took third place.
On Sept. 9, they traveled to Salina, where they placed fifth, then two days later, the team traveled to Dodge City, where they took third place overall.
“The team has worked really hard to live up to our past teams’ reputations,” senior Lily Butler said, “I’m really proud of us and have high hopes for the rest of the season.”
Volleyball’s home tournament was on Aug. 30, when they went up against five teams. They defeated Clearwater, Scott City and Thomas More Prep, each by 2-0, but lost to Lawrence and Olathe North, 0-2.
On Sept. 9 was a Hays triangular, where they played against two schools, Nickerson and Smokey Valley. Against both teams, the girls won, 2-0.
Two days later, on Sept. 11, they traveled to Dodge City to face Dodge City, Lakin and Sublette. There, they won all their matches, 2-0.
On Sept. 16 at home, they lost both matches to Great Bend and won one match and dropped two others to Manhattan.
“This week, our team had a couple of losses to good teams,” head coach Shannon Funk said. “I feel good about our season and this team. The girls play well together and are always driven to keep getting better.”
Girls tennis has attended four matches since the start of the season.
On Aug. 28, they traveled to Cimarron, where senior Delia Dixon placed second and senior Melissa Boland placed fifth in singles. The doubles team of senior Jaydn Younger and senior Brynn Zweifel placed third, and the other doubles team of senior Mya Ploutz and Emersyn Sander placed fifth.
They then went to Great Bend on Sept. 9, where Boland and junior Dakota Maier both placed second in their singles matches. The doubles team of Younger and Zweifel placed third, and the other doubles team of senior Savannah Clingan and Sander placed fourth.
The third meet they traveled to was in Salina on Sept. 13, with four singles players and two double teams. Overall, at the meet, the team placed 13th. In singles, Dixon placed 14th, Boland placed 17th , Sander placed 21st and senior Ani McClure placed 23rd. Clingan and Ploutz placed 10th in doubles, and Younger and Zweifel placed 14th.
Two days later, on Sept. 15, they went to Victoria, where Dixon and Ploutz both placed second in singles. Clingan and Sander placed fifth in doubles, as well as Boland and McClure placing first in doubles.
“The outlook for the rest of the season is exciting, as the girls are practicing hard,” new head coach Alicia Plante said. “They are trying new strategies, building confident mindsets and growing into a strong varsity team.”
