At Hays High School on May 16 during PRIDE Time, students gathered for an assembly in the gym for the debate team, as it held a fundraiser that involved teachers getting “pied” in the face.
For the fundraiser, students could donate money to jars in the front office to have their names be put into a raffle to have chances of pieing a teacher in the face at the assembly.
According to sophomore Alex Leiker, a debate team member, the money went towards “paying for the team to go to nationals for the first time because the cost of traveling is a lot.”
The debate team asked different teachers if they would agree to be put on a list of teachers who could get chosen to get pied at the assembly. Once they had the teacher volunteers, that is when students could donate a dollar per chance to have their name added to the jar with the specific teacher that they wanted to have a chance to pie.
Debate coach Mr. Paul English had the idea because he didn’t want to do a 50:50 raffle,” Leiker said, adding that the team also wanted to get students involved in the fundraiser activity.
On the day of the assembly, students had the option to go to the assembly in Gym A, where in the center of the court, the debate team members had set up chairs and whipped cream pies. Once students had arrived, a speaker called out three teacher names to come down and get pied, and after they were ready, the announcer called out three student names who had won the chance to pie the teachers. In total, nine students were able to pie nine teachers.
In addition to this fundraiser event, the debate team also has sought other donations to fund their trip to nationals, and several people have donated money towards their trip.
“We had donations from some law firms as support,” Leiker said.
