On Friday, May 2, members of Chamber Singers performed at 12th Street Auditorium in their annual acapella event. Family, friends and fellow Chamber Singers all came to show their support for the singers.
Along with the lack of instruments, the acapella event does not follow the traditional aspects of other Chamber Singers’ performances.
“Acapella is different from our normal singing because we’re really on our own for a lot of it,” junior Johanna Jones said. “Each member is assigned a ‘role’ when we’re split into our groups, and they’re expected to fulfill that throughout the month or so that we practice. I prefer acapella over our usual singing/concerts because it gives us a chance to make connections with different people and allows the responsibility to be on the students, which I feel is a good life lesson to learn.”
The acapella event allowed students to embrace their creativity for song choices and additional props. One of the groups, for example, appeared on stage in colorful wigs.
“My favorite part of the night was getting to see all of the other groups perform,” Jones said. “I loved performing, but I think it was most exciting to see what the other groups had up their sleeves.”
After about one month of preparation, the Chamber Singers displayed their musical talent and on-stage entertainment abilities.
“I feel like the performance went well for most of us,” Jones said. “It’s always a bit stressful because it’s sandwiched in between other Chamber Singers’ events at the end of the school year, but it’s never too much stress. Of course, there are things that each group underestimated and didn’t have a ton of time to work out, but overall, I was pleasantly surprised with how well it turned out, considering a lot of the Chamber Singers this year haven’t done acapella before.”
