On Monday, April 7 and Tuesday, April 8, members of Hays High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter competed at state in Wichita.
Prior to state, Hays competed at the district competition in Downs, alongside Ellis, Hoisington and Victoria. The students who scored 70 or above in their categories moved on to state.
Hays took three students to state in Wichita. Junior Lindsey Hernandez received silver, junior Oakley Wichers received silver and sophomore Avery Arias received gold. Two to three students scoring 85 or higher in each category moved on to nationals.
Arias will go on to compete at nationals in Orlando, Fla., from July 5-9.
“Making it to nationals felt amazing because I have put in a lot of time and effort,” Arias said. “However, being the only one from Hays was bittersweet. I know how hard everyone worked, and I wish we could’ve shared this moment together. Still, I’m incredibly proud and honored to represent Hays High at nationals.”
