Each year, students in the news or yearbook classes at Hays High School have the opportunity to compete in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association (KSPA) regional contests.
The students can compete in up to five visual contests or writing contests. If they place first through sixth at regionals, they qualify for state. In March, KSPA announced regional winners, with Hays High having 41 state qualifiers.
Students in first place were the following: senior Eleanor Bittel for Editorial Cartoon; senior Jaynie Brooks for Advertising; junior Khandi Guzman, senior Emmaline Leuschner, senior Haley Roth and senior Katelyn Willemsen for Multimedia Storytelling and senior Tavia Wynn-Coffman for Headline Writing and Design.
In second place were senior Caira Augustine, Brooks, senior Maycie Holdeman and senior Marisa Wasinger for Multimedia Storytelling; Bittel and Wynn-Coffman for Video PSA; junior Lily Butler and junior Rylen Harrington for Yearbook Theme & Graphics; Holdeman for Yearbook Design; Roth for Infographic Design; senior Clare Tholstrup for Copyediting; Tholstrup for Review Writing; junior Lizzy Vajnar for Cutline (Caption) Writing and Vajnar for Student Life Photography.
In third place were sophomore Alijah Arias for Social Media; Arias & senior Cason Grezaszak for Video News; Arias and Guzman for Yearbook Theme & Graphics; senior Avery Augustine for Editorial Cartoon; senior Reagan Bates, junior Delia Dixon, junior Kennedi Fischer and Tholstrup for Multimedia Storytelling; Butler for Student Life Photography; Leuschner for Yearbook Design and senior Kale Schwein for Headline Writing & Design.
In fourth place were Caira Augustine for Social Media; Bates for Copyediting; Bittel for Digital Illustration; senior Jordan Breinig for Infographic Design; Butler for Yearbook Copy Writing; Wasinger for Advertising and Willemsen for Editorial Writing.
In fifth place were Arias for Digital Illustration; Bates for Review Writing; senior Hank Corsair for Sports Writing; Fischer for News Page Design; sophomore Brayden Staley for News Writing and Wasinger for Yearbook Sports Writing.
In sixth place were Dixon for News Page Design; Holdeman for Yearbook Sports Writing; Leuschner for Yearbook Copy Writing; sophomore Devin Quach for Sports Action Photography; Schwien for Sports Writing and Vajnar for Academics Photography.
All students who competed in contests received feedback following the contests. Those who qualified for state will finish their entries in April, and results will be announced in May.
