The Hays High School wrestling teams stayed in Hays on Feb. 6 where they dualed against Salina South.
On the boys’ side for varsity, senior Dalton Meyers, junior Jaxson Chartier, junior Grady Lind, junior Jonathan Rigler, sophomore Ethan Branaman, sophomore Tanner Geist and sophomore Cyler Luck all scored six points each for the team.
Senior Roberto Macias scored three points while junior Masion Desaire, sophomore Camden Luck and freshman Brian Prough competed but did not score points for the team. The ending score was 45 points for Hays and 28 points for Salina South.
On the boys’ junior varsity side, junior Israel Zimmerman, sophomore Jayden Trout, freshman Lane Geist and freshman Athan Witt won their matches while junior Parker Linenberger and sophomore Jared Anschutz competed but did not win their matches. However, these matches did not affect the scoring on the boys’ team.
“I felt like our teams were fairly evenly matched,” head coach Heath Meder said. “That day, we wrestled a lot better. We talk about winning and getting bonus points in the last four matches of the dual. It was nice to have our last home dual and have our seniors dual for the last time at Hays, and I think that is a good lead-in to regionals.”
On the girls’ side, senior Tionna Napue, junior Lexi Barnett, junior Addison Neuburger, sophomore Emersyn Copper, sophomore Timber Lovewell, sophomore Keyla Macias, sophomore Eleanor Stoffel, sophomore Kenlee Vehige, sophomore Crystal Walters, freshman Chassidy Carlisle and freshman Chloe Robben all scored six points each for the team.
Senior Ava Ruiz, junior Audrey Gutierrez and sophomore Adalynn Wilkie competed but did not score for the team. The final score was 66 points for Hays and 18 points for Salina South.
“The girls came out firing start to finish,” Meder said. “We wrestled a good team in Salina South, and we showed up. The girls, from the top to the bottom of the entire roster, wrestled very well. Salina South did have some ranked girls on their team. For the most part, wherever we matched up, we matched their wrestling.”
