To open the season, the Hays High School lady Indian basketball team won the Hays City Shootout tournament for the first time since 2002.
The first game the team played was on Thursday, Dec. 5 against Newton, which the lady Indians won, 67-29. The girls then played Hugoton on Friday, Dec. 6 and won, 64-12. To finish out the tournament, the lady Indians beat Life Prep in the championship game, 63-56.
Along with winning the overall tournament, many girls were recognized for their hard work. Senior Molly Martin and freshman Jenna Schmeidler were selected to the All-Tournament Team, and senior Katie Linenberger was voted as the Tasha Arneson Most Inspirational Player and selected to the All-Academic Team for the shootout.
“I thought our girls had a wonderful tournament,” head coach Len Melvin said. “Many of them played well and contributed in several ways.”
