Over the past two weeks, the Hays High School Scholars Bowl team has competed in multiple tournaments.
On Tuesday, Nov. 19, the varsity team competed in Lyons. Beloit, Buhler, Chase, Ellsworth, Fairfield, Haven, Hays, Hesston, Hillsboro, Hoisington, Larned, Minneapolis, Moundridge, Nickerson, Smokey Valley and Southeast of Saline were all the schools in attendance.
Just two days later, on Thursday, Nov. 21, both varsity and junior varsity competed in Salina. Abilene, Bishop Carroll, Campus, Cornerstone, Derby, Great Bend, Hays, Hutchinson, Junction City, Lincoln, McPherson, Newton, Sacred Heart, Southeast of Saline, St. John’s Beloit, Wichita Collegiate and Wichita East were all the schools in attendance. Hays did not place.
Thomas More Prep hosted a tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23, and Hays High’s JV team competed. Caney Valley, Garden City, Hays, Norton, Phillipsburg, St. John’s Beloit, Sterling, TMP, Wichita East and Wichita Independent were all the schools in attendance.
On Monday, Nov. 25, Hays High hosted a tournament, and the varsity team competed. Ellinwood, Hays, Lyons, Phillipsburg A, Phillipsburg B, Scott Community, TMP, Trego and Wichita East were all the teams competing. Wichita East took first, Hays took second and Phillipsburg A took third.
Both varsity and JV competed at the tournament in Ellinwood on Tuesday, Dec. 3. For JV, the schools attending included Central Plains, Ellinwood, Hays, Hoisington, Hutchinson Trinity, Macksville, Ness City and St. John. Hays JV took first place. The schools in attendance for varsity included Chase County, Ellinwood, Hays, Hutchinson Trinity, Macksville, Ness City, Otis-Bison and St. John. Ness City took first place for varsity, and Hays took second.
The Scholars Bowl season will pick back up after Winter Break with their first tournament of the new year on Jan. 16 at Kapaun Mt. Carmel in Wichita.
“I think we should be optimistic about the rest of the season,” senior John Weisenborn said. “We were able to keep up with some of the better teams we’ve met so far. I think we’ve got a real shot to win something at regionals this year.”
