Auditions for Hays High School’s Fall Musical, “Sweeney Todd,” began on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
To audition, students were required to fill out a form with basic information about themselves, select a song they wanted to use during their audition, then sign up for a time slot to sing their selected song. If students who auditioned received a callback, they were required to read a few lines and sing a portion of a song from the musical the next day. The cast list was then announced on Friday, Sept. 8.
The main cast list consists of the following:
Senior Eric Lucio as Sweeney Todd
Junior Jordan Aschenbrenner as Mrs. Lovett
Senior Nate Henderson as Anthony
Senior Kendra Ryan as Johanna
Junior Oscar Flores as Judge Turpin
Junior Caleb King as Toby
Senior Atlas Seib as The Beadle
Senior Ellie McGuire as Lucy/Beggar Woman
Senior Galahad Nichols as Signor Pirelli
The ensemble this year consists of seniors Sam Albin, Sophie Ballenger, Beth Bowles, Calliope Green, Brooke Leiker, Calvin Moore, Dakota Normandin and Nathan Ward; juniors Addy Brull and Elizabeth Noble; sophomores Levi Harrison, Johanna Jones, Bryler Russell, Bryson Weber, Connor Werth, Olivia Werth and Rose Windholz; and freshmen Daniel Adkins and Harley Foarde.
Chorus members include senior Tim Koehn; sophomores Leo Cain, Ahna Leiker, Loren Tervort and Lizzy Vajnar; and freshmen Kali Beougher, Adrian Carrillo Maldonado, Kayden Eaton, Riley Flax, Jocelyn Goodspeed, Pashyn Jones, Jazmine Lynd, Ripley Mills-Kulmala, Zari Niles, Mari Paxton, Jacob Ridgway, Alexis Ryan, Adam Slaughter and Julianne Stecklein.
Rehearsals for the musical started on Monday, Sept. 11. The rehearsals and production are being led by music teacher Alex Underwood and choreographer Adrian Rifat with the help of the stage managers, juniors Emmaline Leuschner, Katelyn Willemsen, and Keira Vilaysing.
“We are already off to a fantastic start,” Underwood said. “Students in main roles walked into their first rehearsals already knowing their music rather well, so we could immediately dive into details and deeper meanings. I’m not exaggerating when I say this cast is remarkable.”
The musical will be performed on Nov. 9-11 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at 12th Street Auditorium. There will also be a matinee show on Nov. 8 for Hays High students in music classes.
